A gamified, automated platform for training sports teams
Background
Moonshot Sports, a startup with plans to revolutionize how sports teams learn their playbooks, approached Fresh for assistance. They’d developed a vision for a learning management system that teaches knowledge and skills through fun, challenging games automatically created from coaches’ playbooks. They needed guidance from an experienced tech consultancy to build and launch the platform.
Challenges
- Gaining the trust of coaches to help them move from paper to digital and adopt new habits.
- Keeping players engaged in learning and invested in using the application.
- Onboarding entire teams in under five minutes so they can dive in on day one.
- Designing, developing, and launching the app in less than six months before the start of the Fall football season.
Defining the problem and exploring solutions
To understand the challenges teams face, we talked with coaches, football players, and subject matter experts. Our initial research uncovered crucial insights about their workflow needs, pain points, and opportunities, which we used to explore multiple design directions.
With an initial round of concepts complete, we gathered additional input from coaches and players. Creating a shared vision for what "efficiency" and "engagement" look like for the platform's users allowed us to refine the designs further.
Efficient teaching and learning
"Efficiency" for the app's end users, players and coaches alike, required a streamlined digital experience: less time in front of a screen and more time on the field executing their game plan.
The intuitive content management system allows coaches to manage multiple playbooks, draw plays, create lessons, and build quizzes for players to access, learn, and apply to their game.
Gamified engagement
A critical objective was investing players to use the app consistently.
We included gamification features that build engagement, make the learning experience fun, and encourage players to use key app features like developing their profiles and competing with one another.
Flexible onboarding and team management
A streamlined onboarding process creates better usability, offering coaches multiple ways to invite players and giving players multiple ways to join teams.
Results
We launched the web, iOS, and Android apps before football season started. The MVP was well-received by coaches and players. Over 1000 teams signed up within 6 months of launch. This success allowed Moonshot Sports to secure investment for the next expansion phase.
