Intelligent Products

Fresh helps organizations design and engineer intelligent products that combine electronics, firmware, embedded software, connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver more adaptive, useful, and differentiated experiences. Beyond merely connected, these are products that interpret context, respond in real time, and personalize behavior to improve how people interact with them.

Smart, connected, or intelligent?

Many products today are connected. Some are smart. Fewer are truly intelligent.

Intelligent products combine sensing, firmware, embedded software, connectivity, and embedded or edge AI—often including machine learning—so they can interpret what is happening, respond in real time, and improve the experience in the moment. The distinction is not just technical—it’s whether the product merely passes along data or uses it to sense, reason, and act at the edge, becoming more adaptive, more helpful, and more valuable to the people using it.

Fresh helps organizations design and engineer those products.

Let’s get started.

How Fresh engineers intelligent products

Fresh works across the full stack required to bring intelligent products to life—hardware-aware strategy, embedded software, edge AI, connected systems, and human-centered design. This is Physical AI applied at the product layer: sensing, edge compute, and reasoning built into the device itself, not bolted on after launch.

Embedded and edge intelligence

Fresh brings compute, sensing, and control logic directly into the product, not bolted on afterward.

  • Embedded firmware & controls: Firmware and embedded software that coordinate sensors, controls, and device behavior close to the hardware.
  • Edge AI & edge compute: On-device inference for real-time, low-latency responses—critical when power, bandwidth, privacy, or safety limits rule out a round-trip to the cloud.
  • Physical AI at the edge: Decisions the product has to make on its own, in the moment; the same edge-native principle behind Fresh’s broader Physical AI work.

Connected product systems

Fresh extends product value beyond the device itself, with security engineered in from the start.

  • Device-to-cloud architecture: App-connected systems, often built on IoT protocols and platforms.
  • Telemetry & event pipelines: Operational data flows that support visibility and improvement over time.
  • Over-the-air updates: Firmware, model, and feature updates delivered securely after launch.
  • Security & privacy: Authentication, encryption, and privacy-aware data handling for any product with access to real-world data and control.

AI-enabled product experiences

Fresh makes a product’s intelligence something people can trust, not a black box.

  • Personalization & recommendation: Features that adapt to users, environments, or usage patterns, often powered by machine learning.
  • Prediction & contextual assistance: Built into products and product ecosystems to anticipate needs.
  • Human-centered interaction design: Makes intelligent behavior understandable, trustworthy, and easy to extend over time.

Intelligent Products FAQ

A connected product can transmit data or respond to a remote command. An intelligent product goes further—it interprets what's happening around it and adjusts its own behavior, often using embedded or edge AI to make that judgment locally, in real time, rather than just passing data along for someone else to act on.

They're not separate disciplines. Intelligent products are Physical AI applied at design time—the same sense, reason, act loop that powers Fresh's robotics and automation work, engineered into the product itself at the design stage rather than added onto a robot or automation cell after the fact.

Not always locally. Some systems split capability across device, edge, and cloud layers. Embedded and edge AI, and the edge compute that supports them, matter most when low latency, privacy, resilience, or real-time responsiveness rule out waiting on a network round trip.

Any product that senses its environment, makes its own decisions, and connects to a network needs safety and security engineered in from the start. Fresh designs within defined operating limits to protect people and devices, and builds architectures with authentication, encrypted communication, secure over-the-air updates, and privacy-aware data handling, so intelligence doesn't become the product's biggest vulnerability.

Sensing hardware, edge compute, and embedded AI models keep getting cheaper and more capable, while customers increasingly expect products to behave like assistants rather than appliances. Teams that build intelligence into the architecture early end up with products that are easier to differentiate and cheaper to improve later through firmware and model updates rather than a hardware redesign.

With strategy, design, and engineering, we help clients bring intelligent products to market. From firmware and embedded software to connected architecture, edge and embedded AI integration, product UX, and the cloud and data layers that support it all, we plug in wherever clients need us to.

Yes. Some teams are building new products from scratch; others want to add intelligence to devices, platforms, or product lines already in market. Either way, the work starts with identifying where intelligence creates real value, then engineering the stack—hardware, software, and everything connecting them—around it.

Firmware and embedded software are where a product's real-time behavior actually lives—the layer that decides how sensors, controls, and AI models behave under real operating constraints like power, latency, and safety. Get that layer wrong, and no amount of cloud-side intelligence can fix it after the fact.

Intelligence that people don't understand or trust doesn't get used, however well it performs in testing. Fresh designs the interaction layer alongside the sensing and AI layers so the people using a product, not just the engineers who built it, can rely on it, adjust it, and extend it over time.

A short discovery conversation usually surfaces where intelligence could improve the experience, create differentiation, or unlock a stronger roadmap. From there, Fresh helps define the opportunity, architecture, and delivery path that fits your product and constraints.
